About Yellowbike

Ambitions

The Yellowbike concept is to provide affordable, environmentally friendly electric and conventional pedal bikes for hire to visitors and commuters. The bikes are supported by a flexible infrastructure of solar powered docking stands, GSM’RFID asset management systems, keypad controlled locks and dedicated maintenance staff. As with Barclays Bikes in London, Yellowbike offers sponsors a highly visible and effective means of name recognition advertising.

Following a limited but controlled pilot in Lyndhurst in the New Forest in the summer of 2010, Yellowbike trialled its docking stands in West Cowes and Shanklin on the Isle of Wight in the summer of 2011. It will then seek to license its system of remote docking stands so that additional locations will become available in the UK.

Preferred locations are railway stations, ferry terminals, hotels and public houses, holiday parks, local visitor attractions, and out of town business parks.

  • Electric bikes are power assist from a 36v motor on the rear hub and can be recharged.
  • Yellowbike’s electric bikes are not designed for off-road cycling.
  • Electric bike batteries last for 25 miles in normal conditions. There is an energy meter on each bike.
  • All electric bikes have on-board limiters to comply with the legal requirement of 15.5mph maximum
  • 4 hours is required for a full charge from empty.
  • During the night, fully charged batteries will replace those used during the day.
  • State of the art electronics operate at Bike Parks to monitor the coming and going of bikes at the stands.
  • For the more senior visitor in particular, electric bikes offer an opportunity to travel in freedom.
  • There are also conventional pedal bikes available for hire.
  • Adult pedal bikes are suitable for the grown up and those aged 12 upwards.
  • Smaller frame pedal bikes are suitable for small ladies and those aged 6 to 12 years.

Environmental Considerations

  • You create sustainability
  • You reduce your carbon footprint
  • Air quality will be improved by not travelling by car
  • Accessibility is increased
  • Congestion is reduced by specifically encouraging tourists to travel by cycle rather than car
  • It fulfils the needs of travellers with ‘green’ credentials.
  • It promotes an active, healthy and ethical lifestyle.

Docking stands

  • Each docking stand will secure and control 2 bikes.
  • Each bike will be secured by a specially designed lock, operated by the rental and reservation systems, which are web based and accessed through the internet or via the central Bookings Desk.
  • The automated system will release bikes when a valid release pin code, sent to the hirer on their mobile phone, is entered at the bike park keypad, which is powered by solar.
  • The embedded technology within the stand constantly monitors the location of each bike ensuring that a returned bike can be quickly rehired.
